Limit background app update

By default, many of your apps work behind the scenes to update data, but that can drain your smartwatch’s battery, and you probably don’t need every app to update all the time (it’ll download data when you open it anyway). Here’s how to limit background app refresh.

Apple Watch

  • Open upWatchesapp on the connected iPhone and tapGeneral>restore background apps to completely disable or disable individual applications.

Google Wear OS watch

  • This is managed automatically on Wear OS watches, but you can restrict app permissions by going toSettings>Apps and notifications >App permission (Be careful because some apps won’t work properly if you restrict their permissions).

Check battery usage

Finding out what’s draining your smartwatch’s battery makes it easy to fix. Check your battery usage to see what changes might be effective. Unfortunately, there is no way to view this information on the Apple Watch, but you can check the battery statusSettings>battery>Battery status.

Google Wear OS watch

  • Open the Wear OS app or companion smartwatch app on your phone and go toSettings>Advanced settings > Watch battery to see which apps are draining your battery.

Uninstall the apps

Any apps you don’t use should be uninstalled to ensure they don’t affect battery life.

Turn off other functions

There will likely be a few other features and functions on your smartwatch that can be disabled to save battery, so check your device’s settings. For example, on Apple Watch, you can go toSettings>Activityto turn off reminders, orExercisesswitch toLow power mode during training and turn onFewer GPS and heart rate measurements. Dive into the settings and turn off anything you don’t need or want to use.

Get a charger and a portable battery

If you don’t want to turn features off, you can always up your charging game. An extra charger on your bed, desk at work or even in your pocket or bag can make all the difference. Unfortunately, most smartwatches require proprietary chargers, but Apple Watch owners have a few options, like the OtterBox 2-in-1 Power Bank with Apple Watch Charger ($50) and the Satechi Quatro Wireless Power Bank ($100).
